Lyrics

Here is a sampling of the poetry created in the StprySongs workshops. These poems are written by participants, both individually and as a group. We then collaborate on turning these poems into the lyrics for a song. The poems here show work in various stages – some have not yet been recorded as a song. Visit the main StorySongs page to hear those recordings.

BONE VALLEY (a site in Central Florida)

…to the tune of Moon River; by Peter Wolf

Bone valley
Central Florida things
from prehistoric times
You’ll find

Sea creatures
To alligators
All fossilized
From back in the day

Mulberry
The town where you can see
Things that used to be
around

Sea cows divine…
Gators too…
Once might eat you…
But they’re dead and gone
Just brittle (Moon River
old bones and me)

A MODERN THANKSGIVING

(To the tune of Over the River and Through the Woods)

Driving down interstates all the way,
Fighting traffic as you go.
There isn’t a need to fear you might speed
As it’s bumper to bumper {SPOKEN/SHOUT} SO SLO-OW!
There’s cops everywhere, but don’t be scared
They can’t reach you anyway!
If we do get stuck we’ll just open the trunk,
And have Thanksgiving dinner on the high-way!

PARODY: to the tune of Folsom Prison Blues

I hear that brain a hummin’, it’s right there on TV
I know the answer’s comin’ from the king of jeopardy!
Everybody’s watchin’ To see who’ll take him down
Waitin for the winner who’ll take Jeopardy James’s crown.

His daughter sees him on the screen, but does she really care?
She’s only four years old, just wants to have her daddy there…
He says “I’ll throw you a party When this whole thing’s done.
After all of this hard thinkin’, I’m ready for some fun!”

When they take me from this game show, That’ll mean I’ve finally lost
But I’m two million richer, that’s not too high a cost!
Like my friend Ken Jennings, there’ll come a day when I lose…
But I’ll have consolation—singing the multi- millionaire blues!

THE NEW NORMAL

CHORUS
I don’t want the new normal
want to go to the rock and roll show
Or sitting in the stands, watching my team, while all the fans yell and scream

VERSE
No more shelter at home
where I can’t go out and just roam
sometimes I think I’m losing my mind
The days seem the same as they pass by

CHORUS
I don’t want the new normal
want to go back to the days I’d known
Crowded stores and crowded trains; I’ll never complain about crowds again

VERSE
I’m sick and tired of zoom meetings—
Wanna go where the people really are
But when I have to wear a mask Every time I need some gas,
It’s not as much fun drivin’ ‘round in my car!

I don’t want the new normal
want to go to the rock and roll show
Or sitting in the stands, watching my team, while all the fans just yell and scream
That’s what i need, That’s what I need, That’s what I need…
